A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

Known to Venezuelans as “El Libertador”, Simon Bolivar took charge of Latin America and played a crucial role in turning Spain-controlled regions into sovereign states of their very own. Venezuela itself, along with Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama all earned their independence thanks to Bolivar’s work.

Born in 1783 to a wealthy Creole family of the aristocracy, Simon Bolivar followed the tradition of the time and was sent to Spain to receive his education. He spent time in France, where he discovered the ideas of the Enlightenment—ideas that spurred his desire to overthrow Spanish rule in Latin America. Bolivar saw Spain grow disordered and disorganized thanks to the Peninsular War, so he took advantage of this and began campaigning for Venezuela’s independence in 1808 by speaking with the wealthiest of the Creole population. Bolivar established a national congress, winning over the Venezuelans in just three years.

Though Spain attempted to stop Simon Bolivar’s campaign for independence by sending large numbers of troops, Bolivar and his countrymen didn’t give up. The Battle of Carabobo sealed Venezuela’s fate in 1821, earning their independence with that final fight against Spain. Once independence was secured, Bolivar continued working for his country. He helped found Gran Colombia, the first union of independent nations in Latin America, and served as its president until 1830. He assisted other South American nations, participating in military campaigns in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia (which was named after Bolivar himself). Simon Bolivar worked to unite all of these newly independent countries and even became a political leader himself as the president of Peru. Today, Simon Bolivar is considered one of the greatest heroes of the Hispanic independence movements throughout the 19th century.
