A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

“Ain’t I a Woman?” is perhaps one of the most famous and well-known quotes from the first wave of feminism and the very start of the women’s rights movement of the 19th century. Spoken by African American Sojourner Truth, a former slave, these words came to reflect both the abolitionist sentiment and the women’s rights movement that occurred during the 1800s in America’s history. A fierce fighter for both slaves and the African American community, women and the right to vote for every individual, Sojourner Truth spoke out against the social injustices of her lifetime.

Born into slavery in approximately 1797 in New York, Sojourner Truth was originally named Isabella Baumfree. Sojourner escaped her enslavers in 1826, taking her newborn daughter with her into freedom. Once free, she fought legally to earn her right to have her son join her as well—and Sojourner Truth became the very first African American woman to win a legal case regarding freedom against a white slaveholding man. Once free of her past in 1843, Isabella Baumfree adopted a new name of her choosing: Sojourner Truth.

Sojourner Truth was convinced that God was the one who called her to her purpose in life. This is what led her to the 1851 Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio—and to that famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?” Those words, those incredibly powerful words, United African American abolitionists, suffragists, and every woman who heard it.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Famous People collection of quality costume clothing, this children’s Sojourner Truth costume is authentic to the 1800s and the attire worn by the storied abolitionist and women’s rights activist herself.
