Though the most famous figures of Black History are often those who fought for freedom or for equality, some conducted less visible fights for progress and equality. Mary Fields, better known as Stagecoach Mary or Black Mary, is one such woman. Although she didn’t make her fight very visible to the public, she’s remembered in history as a rule breaker, strong woman, and force to be reckoned with.
Born in the 1830s, Mary Fields was born into slavery in Tennessee. When slavery was finally outlawed 1865, Mary became a free woman. About 30 years later, the woman who would earn the nickname “Stagecoach Mary” began working for the U.S. Postal Service as the first African American female star route mail carrier in the nation’s history. In 1895 at age 60, Mary began a new career as a mail carrier — she won the job because she was the fastest applicant to hitch a team of horses to a cart. Once employed, nothing stopped Fields from delivering the mail. If weather was bad, she delivered the mail on foot. If her horses were unable to walk a route, she’d deliver it (even via snowshoe at times). Mary ultimately worked her way up to star route mail carrier, running the mail as her very own business and breaking down barriers for African Americans and women.
