Women and young girls today have many women who came before them to thank for the freedoms, the rights, and the privileges that presently exist. From the first women to participate in politics to the suffragists of the 19th century to the activists of more recent decades, the women’s rights movement has seen many different lives—and one of the women who started it all was Susan B. Anthony. As the leading figure of the women’s rights movement during the 1800s, Anthony fought fiercely for women to have rights equal to those of men.

From a young age, Susan was dedicated to social justice. Born into a Quaker family that believed in equality, Susan B. Anthony was an active reformer. At just 17 years old, she collected anti-slavery petitions for the American Anti-Slavery Society. Years later, she took social reform on aggressively by founding the New York Women’s State Temperance Society. In response to being banned from speaking at conferences, Anthony fought back. In 1863, she founded the Women’s Loyal National League to abolish slavery — and Anthony conducted the largest petition drive in the nation’s history to fight slavery. She continued fighting, starting her own women’s rights newspaper, founding the National Woman Suffrage Association, and writing the six-volume History of Woman Suffrage. Anthony even introduced the first Equal Rights Amendment, though it failed to be ratified.

Today, women remember Susan B. Anthony as the mother of women’s voting rights and the powerhouse behind the Nineteenth Amendment — often called the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Anthony fought tirelessly for women to be able to participate in politics and government, but she didn’t accomplish her incredible feats alone. Together with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Anthony divided the women's rights movement in two when the women decided to deny support for the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution. Anthony and Stanton opposed giving legal protection and voting rights to African American men; the women wanted women of every race, as well as men of every race, to all be granted those rights. Though this caused division, it didn’t detract from the movement as Elizabeth Cady Stanton helped forge the path towards the right to vote.
