A Heritage Costumes Exclusive
History is filled with the stories of great conquerors and leaders who shaped countries, militaries, and entire sections of the world. Some ruled kindly while others ruled with fear and terror — but of all the emperors, leaders, and conquering forces, few are remembered as positively as Constantine the Great. With great cities in his name spread throughout the Roman Empire, strong religious influence that can still be seen today, and a host of governmental accomplishments that helped make the modern world, Constantine the Great created a legacy that few can match.
Born in what’s now known as Serbia 272 AD, Constantine the Great was the son of an officer in the Roman Army and a Greek mother. He was destined to play an important role in the Roman Empire from a young age; in 293 AD, Constantine’s father became the deputy emperor of the western part of the empire. Constantine himself, once old enough, was sent to join the military tribune in the east. Constantine continued rising through Rome’s ranks, becoming a senior emperor and a military hero who fought alongside his father. And, in 324 AD, Constantine become the emperor of the entire Roman territory after defeating Emperors Maxentius and Licinius of the west and east.
Constantine became Constantine I, and he quickly enacted policies that made the empire stronger. From administrative changes to financial laws to social and military reforms, the new emperor restructured the government and reshaped the military so it could handle threats both internal and external. Constantine also introduced the solidus, or the gold standard for both Byzantine and Roman currencies — a standard that new nations like the U.S. would take on themselves centuries later. He resettled territories abandoned by previous emperor and brought together tribes along the empire’s frontiers. He built new imperial residences and even renamed cities — like today’s Istanbul — to Constantinople. Under Constantine, the Byzantine Empire truly became a force in the world, and his political legacy is a symbol of imperialism.
Many historians, however, remember Constantine the Great for another reason: he was the first Roman emperor to adopt the Christian religion. As the “First Christian Emperor,” Constantine was the first to declare religious tolerance for Christianity in a notoriously intolerant empire. He had a hand in creating important pieces of the religion like the Nicene Creed, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the suspected site of Jesus’ tomb, and designated places of holiness. In some branches of Christianity, Constantine the Great is now a venerated saint.
