A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

History is filled with the stories of great leaders who shaped countries, militaries, and the world. Some, like Mark Antony, are remembered best for the wars they fought and the battles they faced. As the Roman Empire’s eastern emperor, Mark Antony faced both political turmoil and war. Despite the strife he faced, Antony became a central figure in Roman history. Perhaps best known today for his relationship and alliance with Egyptian queen Cleopatra, Mark Antony left an indelible mark on the Roman Empire and the shape of the world as it stands today.

Born into the highest circles of the Roman Empire, Mark Antony joined a line of men who’d served the empire well. As soon as he was of age, Antony joined the Roman Army and became a cavalry commander. By 50 AD, Antony had a lifetime place in the Roman Senate and was a member of politically influential groups. But everything changed when civil war broke out and Rome began to turn against Julius Caesar. After Caesar’s murder, Antony remained in politics despite his vocal support for the former leader. Fighting continued among the Roman leadership, and ultimately the Roman Empire was divided into the control of three men under the Triumvirate — and Mark Antony became emperor of the eastern portion of the empire.

Antony’s first act was to form an alliance that would bring huge benefits, but that would ultimately become his downfall. He summoned Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, to meet him as the new eastern emperor. Together, the two formed both an alliance and a romance. Cleopatra gave Antony money and resources to wage war, along with two children. After three years apart, Antony returned again to Egypt for more financial and political support. Similarly, Cleopatra used Antony for political gain; their relationship helped her expand her own kingdom and gave her a powerful alliance with Rome.

Unfortunately, their political and emotional alliance couldn’t save Mark Antony. The triumvirate ended in 32 AD and Rome began to turn against Antony. War was declared against Antony and Cleopatra, and when the fighting broke out, Antony couldn’t hold on to his power. He was abandoned by his advisors, his soldiers had no morale, and his territories were lost. During a final battle in September 31 AD, Antony realized there was no hope. He committed suicide, and Cleopatra did as well, hoping to save themselves from the devastating future.
