A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
Scipio the Great. Scipio the African. Scipio Africanus the Elder. Scipio Africanus was a man known by many names both during his lifetime in Ancient Rome and in the years of history since the 200s BC. Officially named Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the man who would become known as Scipio Africanus lived from 236 to 186 BC and is considered one of history’s greatest generals.
Scipio the Great lived quite the life, becoming one of Rome’s best military strategists, and one of the most renowned army leaders worldwide. His achievements were huge — Scipio defeated Hannibal in the Second Punic War at the Battle of Zama, survived the Battles of Ticinus, Trebia, and Cannae (known as the worst military defeat in Roman history), and even saved his own father’s life at the age of 18. Scipio Africanus became even more famous for his refusal to surrender, and he was so determined to win that he threatened fellow Romans at sword point over the possibility of surrendering during war.
