A Heritage Costumes Exclusive:
The name Spartacus carries much significance and glory. A brazen gladiator who killed all who faced his wrath on the sands of the arena, a slave who rebelled against his oppressors and the Roman military—one who fought to end the practice of slavery altogether. Not much is known about Spartacus’ origins; it’s known that he was Thracian, but it’s also believed that he served as a Roman soldier before becoming a prisoner who was sold into slavery before becoming a gladiator.
Once taken captive and stripped of all freedom, Spartacus trained to become a gladiator at the ludus, or gladiator school, of Lentulus Batiatus. Though he earned much victory and fame in the arenas of Rome, Spartacus didn’t want glory; rather, he wanted his freedom. So, in 73 BC, Spartacus and his fellow gladiators and slaves plotted and executed a successful escape. They fought their way to freedom, seizing weapons from their former masters and developing a militia of their very own. Though the Romans tried to squash their rebellion and murder Spartacus, they couldn’t do so.
The Romans were entirely unprepared to face an enemy like Spartacus. The trained soldiers anticipated a military effort that mimicked their own; however, with an “army” of fellow slaves, Spartacus didn’t adhere to any traditional strategy or battlefield fighting. Spartacus was full of surprises, such as climbing a cliff face down vines to kill all Roman troops awaiting them, or outlasting a hunger strike. Despite all that Spartacus accomplished, and all that he did to fight the Romans, he was ultimately defeated in battle. In 71 BC, Spartacus and his men lost their final fight—and though Spartacus’ body was never found, it was assumed that he died alongside his fellow former slaves and former gladiators.
