Officially, it was called a "forage cap" and was most frequently worn in manners that appeared less-than-military in nature. It was often shapeless and rarely protected a soldiers head from anything, including the rain and sun. Despite this, it was still the most common cap worn by troops of both sides of the Civil War. It continued to see use well into the Indian Wars but was later replaced by a more functional cap.
This gray Confederate foot soldier hat is the perfect complement for your Civil War uniform.
