A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
The name Achilles is one familiar to nearly everyone. Today, when we speak of Achilles, we often refer to the famed Achilles’ heel, the traditional “weak spot” that ailed both the Greek hero and people today. Yet Achilles was so much more than his one vulnerable spot. Achilles was a Greek hero, the soldier responsible for success in the Trojan War. He’s also a beloved literary figure as the central character and greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad. Achilles was said to be a demigod; his mother was the nymph Thetis, and his father, Peleus, was the king of the Myrmidons.
Achilles’ most notable feat during the Trojan War was the slaying of the Trojan hero Hector outside the gates of Troy. Although Achilles’ death is not presented in the Iliad, other sources concur that he was killed near the end of the Trojan War by Paris, who shot him in the heel with an arrow. Later legends, including a poem by Statius in the 1st century AD, state that Achilles was invulnerable in every part of his body except for his heel. The death of the great Achilles came not from a dramatic wound or tragedy, but rather from a small wound in his heel. Today, this is where the term Achilles' heel has come to mean a person's point of weakness.
