A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

The first pilgrims left their homes in England in search of one prized luxury: the freedom of religion. With religious strife, oppression, and persecution running throughout London and England’s smaller cities and towns, the pilgrims sought safety and the comfort of practicing and expressing their beliefs somewhere safe. America was that safe haven for the pilgrims, also known as Puritans. However, not all went smoothly when the pilgrims founded their first settlements and began to thrive in this new land. As Anne Marbury Hutchinson and many others discovered, life in America was challenging though it provided the long-awaited freedom they desired.

Born in England as the daughter of an Anglican cleric, Anne Marbury Hutchinson was a well-educated young girl. Unlike other girls in London, she received a full education and then later married her childhood friend William Hutchinson. Together the newlywed Hutchinsons began following a new religious leader: preacher John Cotton, a dynamic man whose beliefs differed from those of the Church of England. Cotton and his followers were emigrating to America, and in 1634 the Hutchinsons followed with their 11 children. Anne Marbury Hutchinson was a central figure in establishing the Boston settlement of New England—she also became the region’s midwife and a strong religious figure. Anne held Puritan gatherings to discuss sermons and church ideas, influencing many.

Unfortunately, Anne Hutchinson’s newfound religious voice rubbed others the wrong way. Not everyone agreed with her opinions, and the Antinomian Controversy erupted. Anne was tried and convicted in 1637, then banished from the Boston colony for her religious positions. A year later, she was excommunicated by the Puritans. This didn’t deter Hutchinson, though; she’d come to America for religious freedom, so she and her supporters established a settlement of their own in Portsmouth. Anne Marbury Hutchinson was a key figure of the religious freedom movement in Europe, and she made her mark in America as one of the first women to challenge ministers’ authority. Historians today call both the most famous and most infamous English woman in colonial history, and she is considered a figure of religious toleration in the state of Massachusetts.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes collection of quality costume clothing, this children’s Anne Marbury Hutchinson pilgrim costume is authentic to the 1600s and the attire worn by the Puritan spiritual adviser herself. You’ll look just like a woman fighting for religious freedom in England when you don this historically accurate costume set.
