A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

In times of crisis, heroes are born — and Clara Barton became a hero during the American Civil War in the 19th century. A pioneer in the field of nursing, most people know Clara Barton as the founder of the American Red Cross. Yet this strong woman was also a teacher, a patent clerk with the U.S. government, and an international figure.

Born on Christmas Day in 1821, Clara Barton wasn’t destined to change nursing from a young age. Though she had two entirely different careers during her adult lifetime, it was nursing that Clara turned to when the Civil War broke out. In 1861, the Baltimore Riot occurred, marking the first bloodshed of the Civil War. And Clara happened to be living nearby at the time. Clara wanted to serve her country, so she went to the victims — and there, at a Washington, D.C. railroad station, she nursed 40 men in uniform. She then left her career as a patent clerk behind. Clara Barton served as a nurse during the entire Civil War, then began touring the U.S. and giving lectures about her experiences. With no formal nursing education available at the time, Clara began educating women everywhere in medicine.

In 1869, Clara traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, where she learned about the International Red Cross. After discovering the important humanitarian work of this organization, she knew she needed to bring it to America. Clara Barton founded the American branch of the Red Cross after a lengthy battle to get government approval in 1873. President Arthur finally approved the Red Cross after Clara argued about its usefulness in humanitarian crises, helping Clara make history in an era when women were not meant to work outside of the home. Today, thanks to her incredible work, Clara Barton’s name is synonymous with the American Red Cross and nurses everywhere. The mother of modern nursing and a savior for wounded Civil War soldiers, Clara left an indelible mark on the country and in the medical field.

Your child can capture Clara Barton’s simple fashion during the Civil War era with this 19th century day dress. This charcoal gray dress, white Red Cross bib apron, Red Cross armband, and white Civil War nurse’s hat evoke the traditional style worn by nurses like Clara who dedicated their days to saving lives off the battlefield.
