A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
James Armistead was one of the most important American spies during the American Revolution. Spies are common, of course, during times of war and conflict between nations; they hide their identity, confuse all who meet them, and conduct their duties in secrecy. Yet what is even more deceiving about the identity of revolutionary spy James Armistead, also known as James Armistead Lafayette, was that he was a black slave.
During the 18th century, it was incredibly rare that a slave would receive such a high amount of trust and importance with the Continental Army, America’s first military. He offered himself as a spy to the American rebels even though he would not be promised his freedom in return. Armistead was only 21 when he volunteered for the revolution, but the Americans soon saw his bravery and intelligence.
Upon entering the military, Armistead was immediately taken to the camp of the American traitor and archenemy Benedict Arnold. Armistead was a convincing spy; no one ever suspected that he could possibly be the enemy. His willingness and loyalty soon had the British unsuspecting of any foul play. Scouts went out daily to relay his messages, taking plans directly to General Lafayette in then Continental Army. Armistead left no life record of himself for the weeks that he spent at the enemy camps. However, his spying led to success and battlefield victories like Yorktown for the revolutionaries — and he was praised greatly by General Lafayette, which helped James Armistead secure his freedom from slavery later in life.
