A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
American statesman, Founding Father, President of the United States, drafter of the Constitution — all of these roles and titles suit James Madison, a colonist and revolutionary who played a hugely important role during the American Revolution of the 18th century. Though James Madison is often remembered most prominently for becoming president during the 1800s, he is one of the men responsible for the shape of the United States today, as it was his hand that guided the creation of every one of our founding documents.
Born in 1751 in Virginia, James Madison grew up to become a highly educated man. He studied at Princeton, learning the ins and outs of history, government, and law. After graduating, Madison became a leader in Virginia, helping to frame the state’s constitution and serving in the Continental Congress. Madison was outspoken and commanding in Congress, and it was his voice, his ideas expressed in the Federalist Papers that helped to shape the final draft of the Constitution. In later years, when he was referred to as the "Father of the Constitution," James Madison protested that the document was not "the off-spring of a single brain," but "the work of many heads and many hands.”
After securing America’s independence and winning the Revolutionary War, James Madison continued his work in politics, becoming a leader in the brand-new House of Representatives and drafting the laws that became the Bill of Rights. Madison then became President Thomas Jefferson’s Secretary of State, in which position he oversaw the Louisiana Purchase. in 1809, James Madison himself became the fourth U.S. president and served two terms. Still today, Madison’s terms as president are responsible for a strong national government and an equally strong military.
