A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

The signature of John Hancock on the Declaration of Independence is the most flamboyant and easily recognizable of all. It is perhaps no surprise that the story of his part in the revolution is equally engaging. Few figures were more well-known or more popular than John Hancock. He played an instrumental role, sometimes by accident and other times by design, in coaxing the American Revolution into being.

Born in 1737, John Hancock didn’t begin his adult life as a revolutionary fighting the British crown. Rather, he was one of the wealthiest men in the Thirteen Colonies, as he inherited an incredibly profitable mercantile business from an uncle. It wasn’t until Hancock met Samuel Adams that he considered entering politics. John Hancock quickly became Adams’ protege in Boston, who held great influence in the emerging city. As the revolution grew increasingly tense and clashes with the British became more frequent, Hancock used his great fortune to fund the colonists’ cause. In response, the Red Coats turned against Hancock, seizing his shop and his ship after falsely accusing the colonist of smuggling.

None of this bothered or stopped Hancock, though. John Hancock became a leader in Boston, guiding the colonists and aiding for more than two years in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. As president of Congress, John Hancock was given the honor of being the first revolutionary to sign the Declaration of Independence — and he left his mark with a large, stylish signature that’s so clearly visible, it’s become synonymous with a signature still today.

An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Patriotic collection of quality costume clothing based on the Founding Fathers and other renowned American patriots, this children’s John Hancock costume is authentic to the 1700s and the attire worn by the most famous signer of the Declaration of Independence during the revolution and colonial era. You’ll look just like Hancock himself when you don this historically accurate costume set. Included is a fully lined black colonial frock coat (also known as a colonial jacket), a matching vest (or colonial waistcoat) with an attached lace jabot, a pair of black colonial knee breeches, and lace cuffs.

Of course, every revolutionary needs a few accessories, too, especially if you hope to remembered for both your signature and your style. John Hancock made history wearing his attire with a traditional John Hancock wig, colonial socks and shoe buckles. If you’d like to enhance your attire with our Heritage Costume accessories (which are not included with the purchase of this costume), you can pair this costume outfit with these options from our wide selection of added details to create your very own personalized costume.
