Women and young girls today have many women who came before them to thank for the freedoms, the rights, and the privileges that presently exist. From the first women to participate in politics to the suffragists of the 19th century to the activists of more recent decades, the women’s rights movement has seen many different lives—and one of the women who started it all was Lucretia Mott. As the mother of the early women’s rights movement during the 1800s, Mott was one of the first to fight fiercely for women to have rights equal to those of men.

Lucretia Mott grew interested in social reform and women’s rights when she found herself excluded from politics. As an abolitionist, Mott wanted to attend the World Anti-Slavery Convention in 1840—yet as a woman, she was forbidden to do so. This aggravated Mott, who turned her frustration into positivity when she met another excluded woman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Together, Mott and Stanton came up with the idea for a women’s rights convention, and the duo went on to establish the historic Seneca Falls Convention. Lucretia Mott became a mentor to Stanton, and her influence on the world is far-reaching. Considered one of the greatest American women of the 19th century by her contemporaries, Mott built a legacy of fighting for social justice.

In addition to her strong stance on women’s rights, Lucretia Mott was deeply religious. A devoted American Quaker since birth, Mott remained as resilient in her Quaker faith as she was in her fight for social justice. Influenced by prominent early Quakers like Theodore Parker and William Penn, Mott was part of the Free Religious Association. The group aimed to unite people of different religious backgrounds, and its members included rabbis, priests, and even Ralph Waldo Emerson. Mott’s work within the Quaker religion left a significant impact behind; generations of Quakers after her believed in her positions, citing her as a formative religious figure.
