Women were patriots, revolutionaries, and strong opponents of the British monarchy during the years of the American Revolution. Yet when war broke out and the men of the Thirteen Colonies took to the battlefield, the women didn’t follow—or, it was assumed that women didn’t follow. They did, though, helping their brand new nation within the ranks of the men of the Continental Army. One of those brave women was Molly Pitcher, also known by her birth name of Mary Ludwig Hays. Molly Pitcher followed her husband to Valley Forge, originally meant to be a source of support, and ended up becoming one of the strongest, most historic women of the Revolutionary War.

Molly Pitcher became an integral part of the Battle of Monmouth. Her husband, William Hays, enlisted in the 4th Pennsylvania Artillery in 1777 and Pitcher followed him to Valley Forge to offer support as a camp follower. Pitcher washed the soldiers’ clothes and blankets, cared for the sick and dying, and brought water to soldiers on the front lines. Any time a man shouted, “Molly! Pitcher!” she responded, carrying fresh water for their cannons and earning a new nickname.

While Molly traversed the battlefield at Monmouth in weather that reached temperatures over 100 degrees, her husband William collapsed behind his cannon from heat exhaustion. Other soldiers carried him off the battlefield, and there was no one to take command of his station. Molly Pitcher decided to step in. For the remainder of the battle, Molly swabbed and loaded the cannon, fighting alongside the men of the Continental Army. She nearly lost her legs when a British musket ball flew between her legs and ripped her skirt, but Molly Pitcher continued loading the cannon and fighting. The revolutionaries saw victory by the day’s end.

Some historians believe that Molly Pitcher’s story has been exaggerated by history—little is known about her life as Mary Ludwig Hays, from her childhood to her death. Yet Commander in Chief George Washington himself knew of Molly’s heroics. At the end of the battle, Washington asked his men if he had, in fact, seen a woman loading a cannon in the midst of the fighting. To commemorate her service and courage, Molly Pitcher was issued a warrant as a non-commissioned officer from Washington under her legal name, Mary Hays. She was then known as “Sergeant Molly,” a nickname that history still knows her by today.
