While common sense is considered an important piece of every individual’s thought process, it’s also a crucial component of what inspired the Thirteen Colonies to rebel against Britain and secure independence. Revolutionary Thomas Paine authored the two most influential documents of the colonial period, Common Sense and The American Crisis, both of which inspired the American Revolution. It was Paine’s writing that encouraged the rebels to declare their independence from Britain, and it was Paine’s urging voice and ideas that spurred the young nation to war to fight for its freedom.
Born in Thetford, England in 1737, Thomas Paine was not a colonist by birth. Rather, he migrated to the colonies in 1774 with the assistance of Benjamin Franklin. When Paine arrived, the colonists were already itching to cut ties with tyrannical Britain — yet many feared the repercussions. When Paine wrote Common Sense, his words became an immediate sensation. Every rebel, every colonist had a copy of the pamphlet and adored its influential words. As John Adams stated, “Without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.” It was Thomas Paine who brought the United States to its independence with his very first words.
An exclusive piece in our Heritage Costumes Patriotic collection of quality costume clothing based on the Founding Fathers, this children’s Thomas Paine costume is authentic to the 1700s and the attire worn by the political activist during the revolution and colonial era. You’ll look just like Paine himself when you don this historically accurate costume set. Included is a fully lined burgundy colonial frock coat (also known as a colonial jacket) with a tan contrast, a matching tan vest (or colonial waistcoat), a pair of tan breeches (or colonial knickers), a lace jabot, and a pair of cuffs.
Of course, every revolutionary needs a few accessories, too. Thomas Paine made history wearing his attire with a traditional colonial hat, colonial socks, and shoe buckles. If you’d like to enhance your attire with our Heritage Costume accessories (which are not included with the purchase of this costume), you can pair this costume outfit with these options from our wide selection of added details to create your very own personalized costume.
