A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
Many a Roman emperor earned prestige within the annals of history. Rome’s greatest emperors designed governments that would be emulated for centuries to come, fought wars that are still analyzed today, and began modernizing the world one city-state at a time. But only one man started Rome’s trajectory, turning it into a true empire and shaping the world in the process: Augustus Octavian. The very first Roman emperor, Augustus Octavian ruled Rome as a statesman and a military leader. From 27 BC to 14 AD, Octavian took charge of the Roman Empire as a strong yet controversial leader — one who some say is one of the most effective rulers in all of history.
Born Gaius Octavius Thurinus, the future first emperor grew up in a wealthy Roman family. He was connected to powerful Romans through his family lineage — his great uncle was the famed Julius Caesar. From a young age Octavian began honing his military skill. He was a founding member of the Second Triumvirate, along with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, which set out to kill Caesar’s assassins. The Triumvirate scored many battle victories, and eventually the three men named themselves military dictators who each ruled a different piece of the Roman Republic. Yet the men quickly became power hungry, fighting for control of the entire republic against one another. It was Augustus Octavian who emerged victorious and became Rome’s leader.
Immediately upon taking charge, Octavian aimed to make Rome a free republic. He placed governmental power in the Roman Senate’s hands, but maintained autocratic power himself as the military dictator. He gave himself supreme military command, the role of tribune, and the title of censor. Though he rejected the titles of a monarchy, Octavian did act like a monarch or even dictator at times. However, he did have a positive effect on Rome: he established a constitution and ushered in an entire era of peace known as the Pax Romana. No large conflict broke out for over 200 years, even as Octavian expanded Rome’s empire and sphere of influence. It was Augustus Octavian who spread the Roman Empire to Africa and Egypt, who used diplomacy to create peace with former enemies, and who bettered the empire as a whole by building networks of road, establishing a standing army, and creating police and fire fighting services. He changed not just Rome but the entire world with measures such as these, making his name as one of the most effective leaders to ever rule.
