A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
The Revolutionary War required our newly formed country to join forces with other nations to defeat the British Red Coats. When France came to the aid of the new union, the country shared some of its greatest soldiers with the United States. Thanks to French generals like Baron Von Steuben, the Revolutionary War was won.
Baron Von Steuben, born Fredrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben in 1730, rose to military fame as an officer in the Prussian army. As France became involved in the Revolutionary War, the French Minister of War recommended that Benjamin Franklin utilize Von Steuben and his skill within the Continental Army. The young army was growing increasingly desperate, losing all ground and progress to the British forces. Benjamin Franklin passed that suggestion on to George Washington, the commander of the Continental Army, and Washington had Von Steuben at Valley Forge by February 1778. Baron Von Steuben took charge as inspector general and major general in the army, becoming something of a father for the Continental Army by guiding its growth.
Although Von Steuben didn’t speak a word of English, he shared Prussian drill techniques that made the Continental Army far more advanced than their European enemy. During his time fighting alongside the Americans in the Revolutionary War, Baron Von Steuben passed along his great wisdom. He taught the men of the Continental Army the essentials of military drills, tactics, and disciplines. Baron Von Steuben also wrote Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States, the book that became the standard U.S. drill manual — one that wasn’t updated or replaced until the Civil War nearly a century later in the 1860s.
