The name Bluebeard is known for one man and one story: the tale of Bluebeard the pirate, a famed Frenchman who seduced and killed women during the 17th century. Little is known about Bluebeard himself — or, in fact, if Bluebeard truly was a real man and a real pirate — but the legend of his horrific actions lives on today. Bluebeard may have been a terror on the high seas as a pirate, but his most famous and notorious actions occurred on land.
No one knows where Bluebeard originated or how he came to be. The only surviving record of Bluebeard’s story is a French folktale written by Charles Perrault and published in Paris in 1697. According to this folktale, Bluebeard is a wealthy and powerful nobleman — but he’s also horribly unattractive. Even more worrisome, though, is that Bluebeard has a reputation of marrying women who later mysteriously disappear. His marriage proposals to girls in town are all turned down out of fear, so Bluebeard decides that he’ll marry the youngest daughter of his neighbor against her will. He kidnaps her and takes her to his luxurious palace far from town, where his new “wife” is given the keys to the entire palace. Bluebeard soon leaves the country for the seas, leaving the girl alone in the palace. While he’s away, the girl heads into a hidden room in the basement — and when she opens the door, she discovers the room is flooded with blood. Against the walls, the corpses of Bluebeard’s former wives hang.
Today, the legend and folklore of Bluebeard the pirate live on. Even one of the world’s most popular dictionaries recognizes Bluebeard’s tale, defining “Bluebeard” as “a man who marries and kills one wife after another.” Although no one knows for certain who Bluebeard was, and if was a villain as his story claims, it’s certain that Bluebeard earned a reputation as a terrifying pirate captain and husband.
