The Baroque era throughout Europe inspired elegant and extravagant fashion, new types of architecture and design, and some of the most impactful classical music ever created. A central figure in both the Baroque era and the development of classical music, George Frideric Handel helped to shape the classical music that’s still played worldwide today. From composing operas and anthems to perfecting organ concertos, Handel influenced classic music’s sound from London to Germany to Italy throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
Born in Germany in the very same year as fellow classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel changed the landscape of classical music throughout the Barqoue era. Handel spent his career in London, but before he embarked on composing his own music Handel trained in Halle-upon-Saale and gained experience in Hamburg and Italy. By 1712 Handel arrived in London and began drawing inspiration from his exposure to the Italian Baroque style. Just three years into his professional career Handel was an opera star. He founded three commercial opera companies, providing beautiful Italian operas to English audiences.
After seeing success with Italian operas, Handel began composing choral music. He saw such great success that he never again wrote or composed operas. Though Handel began going blind during the later half of his career, he composed more than 40 operas, 29 oratorios, over 120 cantatas, chamber music, odes, organ concerts, and a host of other musical pieces throughout his lifetime. When he died in 1759, George Frideric Handel was buried in Westminster Abbey and given state honors.
Today, Handel is considered one of the Baroque era’s greatest composers — and he’s also one of the most influential classical musicians. Though centuries have passed, works like Handel’s Messiah, Water Music, and Music for Royal Fireworks are still celebrated and popular among classical musicians. And his music has shaped history, too. Three centuries after writing Zadok the Priest for King George II’s coronation, Handel’s anthem is still played for every coronation in the British monarchy. George Frideric Handel revived Baroque music and brought new life into the genre of classic music, adding little-used instruments like the viola d’amore, trombone, clarinets, and lute. Handel left a legacy behind that can’t be matched.
