There is perhaps no man better known by everyone in the world, everyone throughout history, than Jesus Christ. Also known as Jesus of Nazareth or simply Jesus, this man is both one of the most important religious figures in history and the most celebrated preacher of all time. A central figure in Christianity as the son of God and the messiah, a preacher in Judaism, and one of God’s most important prophets as well as the messiah in Islam, there’s no debating the importance of Jesus within the world and its long history.
Born sometime around 4 B.C., it’s a known fact confirmed by all ancient history scholars that Jesus walked the earth as the Bible states. The Gospels of the Christian Bible tell the story of Jesus’ life on earth, stating that Jesus was carried and born of the Virgin Mary, growing up with his mother and Joseph of Nazareth. It’s believed that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, sent to fulfill the prophecy of a messiah and intended to die by crucifixion to atone for the world’s sins. During his adult life Jesus preached throughout the Roman empire, offering lessons, guidance, and encouragement from the Word of God. He performed miracles, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and teaching parables.
Yet the messiah story came full circle when Jesus was arrested by Jewish authorities and handed over to Pontius Pilate, a member of the Roman government. Pilate sentenced Jesus to crucifixion — but, as the Gospels state, Jesus rose from the dead three days later and ascended into heaven. Even centuries later, the world celebrates Jesus’ birth each winter, his crucifixion on Good Friday, and his resurrection on Easter. No matter religious beliefs, Jesus certainly shaped the world and its many religions, preaching and educating people throughout the ancient world.
