When it came to battle, Vikings were not a complex people, and this shows quite heavily in their arms and armor. At Heritage Costumes, we offer a selection of great looking Viking helmets that are both historically accurate and plenty protective, ensuring that you can look as much like a Viking as you wish, while also staying safe from stray blows to the head. We also offer a number of attractive Norman and Saxon helmets for the re-enactors or collector to enjoy as well. It has long-been accepted that when Vikings went to war, they wore helmets adorned with wings and horns, but these were really more of the traditional ceremonial garb, worn only for special occasions, if at all. The typical Viking helmet was actually more like a classic Norman helm, possessing a nose guard and a partially domed cap that will protect your head. Some Viking helms also feature cheek protectors, although these are not necessarily a common feature on all Viking helmets. Norman helmets are similar in shape, possessing a rounded cap and a nose-guard, although Norman helmets tend to be more conical, while Viking helmets are more rounded at the top. And the best part is, if you are looking for a Viking helmet that you can wear into battle, these will fit the bill, as many of our Viking and Norman helmets are fit for use in combat.

Military helmets date from ancient times. Their basic function was to protect the head, face, and sometimes the neck from projectiles and the cutting blows of swords, spears, arrows, and other weapons.

Helmets, armor, and some swords will often come coated in oil when you receive them. The oil helps to prevent rust and tarnishing while shipping the item. This is a good way to protect item when not in use, but you don't want to get oil all over you when you are using it.

How to clean off the oil

The best way to remove this oil is using lacquer thinner to clean it off then letting it air dry. You can then test it with a cotton cloth to see if you've gotten off all of the oil. You are now ready to use your item!

Storing your item

Since helmets, armor, and swords that are not made from stainless steel are prone to rust, it is recommend that you re-coat the item if you are going to store it for any extended amount of time. A coat of WD-40 should work well. There are also sword oils which you can buy that work for longer because they are made to not dry out like WD-40 does after a while.
