A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
The American spirit grew as the nation’s borders expanded throughout the 1700s and early 1800s. It was up to brave explorers themselves to discover all of the new territories that lay ahead, and one man who took on that task was Daniel Boone, famed pioneer, explorer, woodsman, and frontiersman. Over the course of the late 18th century and the start of the 19th century, Daniel Boone became one of the first American folk heroes thanks to his travels across the U.S. frontier.
After fighting for his brand new nation during the Revolutionary War, Boone made a name for himself beyond the colonies. He earned his fame and place in history thanks to his exploration of what is now the state of Kentucky. Daniel Boone traveled throughout the territory looking to hunt and trap game to earn money, selling animal pelts in the fur market. As he followed the game, Boone discovered easy travel routes. He unexpectedly became a trailblazer, forging the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains. The road stretched from North Carolina and Tennessee into Kentucky, and at its end, Boone founded the village of Boonesborough. This settlement in Kentucky became one of the very first American towns west of the Appalachians. By the start of the 19th century, Boonesborough, Kentucky had attracted more than 200,000 American settlers. Daniel Boone’s route led those looking to migrate right into town.
Today, Daniel Boone is still an American icon. A legend during his own lifetime, he gained fame thanks to a written account of his adventures in the Kentucky wilderness was published in 1784. Boone came to be a symbol of the typical American frontiersman, and after his death, his story grew into folklore. He became the subject of tall tales and heroic stories, and over the centuries Boone’s real and fictional adventures became legendary. Today, Daniel Boone is remembered as one of the earliest explorers, as the archetypal Western hero of the United States.
