A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

For decades, children everywhere have grown up learning about the American Midwest and the new frontier of the prairie in the 1800s thanks to one woman: Laura Ingalls Wilder. A young pioneer, teacher, and mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder turned her childhood into the beloved book series Little House on the Prairie. It's Laura who taught children what life on the prairie was really like, what the hardships, excitement, and future were for those early settlers, and just how unpredictable it was to live on the prairie.

Born on February 7, 1867, in a little log cabin in the Big Woods of Wisconsin — a place that inspired the very first Little House on the Prairie novel — Laura Ingalls Wilder was the second in a line of five children. Her childhood was spent moving from the familiar woods of Wisconsin into the unknown American prairie, dealing with surprises each day. As she grew older, Laura became a teacher, met her husband Almanzo Wilder, and became a mother. And in 1929, she faced yet another obstacle: the stock market crash that would lead to the Great Depression.

After losing all of their investments, Laura and the rest of the Wilder family were broke. So, in 1930, Laura decided to make an autobiography she’d written public. Encouraged by a publisher, Laura turned her childhood into the very first Little House book: Little House in the Big Woods. After its incredible success, Laura kept writing, eventually filling eight books with stories of her life on the prairie. Readers of all age still flock to Laura’s stories, enjoying them today just as much as when they were first published.

During the 19th century era, girls like Laura wore clothing that closely mirrored the styles adopted by their mothers. Dressed in miniature versions of women, girls’ dresses out on America’s prairie were long and covered almost the entire body. Sewn from linen and cotton, a typical dress was worn by Laura Ingalls Wilder during the 1800s featured a modest neckline and long sleeves, with a hemline that reached the ground. Atop her hardy dress, Laura would don a bonnet to protect her faces from the harsh sunlight and weather while running around the new lands and expansive fields of the midwest.

Your child can capture the colorful yet simple fashion of the pioneer era with this Laura Ingalls Wilder pioneer dress and bonnet costume set. This floral dress evokes the traditional style of pioneer women like Laura who braved the trials of the west with their families as children. Included with your long, floral print prairie dress is a bonnet, which completes the look of a young girl playing in the fields of the heartland. It’s the perfect piece to don when you’re revisiting America’s westward lands during the 1800s as Laura Ingalls Wilder. Young pioneer girls wore dresses like this every day, keeping protected from the bright sun as well as staying stylish.
