A Heritage Costumes Exclusive

 Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

Many U.S. presidents experience life in the military and on the battlefields of different wars throughout history. Yet one of the best-known military presidents is Ulysses S. Grant, graduate of West Point, army member during the Mexican-American war, and Commanding General of the Union Army during the Civil War.

Surprisingly, Grant chose to retire from the U.S. Army after the Mexican-American War. Yet he struggled with civilian life, missing the military greatly. As soon as the Civil War began in 1861, Grant rejoined the army and began fighting for the Union. He quickly took charge, taking control of Kentucky and Tennessee and leading the Union Army to victory at the Battle of Shiloh. Grant was an aggressive commander, coordinating battles, seizing cities, and bringing defeat to the Confederate Army. In March 1864, President Abraham Lincoln promoted Grant to lieutenant general and named him the official Commanding General of the Army. Under his leadership, the Union brought bloody defeats to Robert E. Lee’s men and ultimately secured surrender on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox.

With the Civil War over, Grant put his army to work overseeing Reconstruction in the southern states. Ulysses S. Grant ran for president and won, taking office in Washington, D.C. in 1868. During his two terms as president, Grant stabilized the turbulent and recently reunited nation, prosecuted the Ku Klux Klan, and enforced civil rights and voting rights laws. He even avoided war with Spain, formed a treaty with England, and implemented a gold standard to strengthen the dollar. Even though his presidency was historic in its own right, Grant is still best remembered for his acumen during the Civil War.
