A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.

In Victorian England, keeping warm with a cloak was a necessity for women and girls alike. On the foggiest of mornings and in the chill of evenings, a cloak kept a woman cozy and protected from the elements, covering her head with a hood and dropping to her ankles for total warmth. A girl’s Victorian cloak was both chic and exquisitely made. Crafted from fabrics like wool, satin, silk, velvet, and pleated chiffon, the cloaks of England’s Victorian era during the 19th century were meant to be seen.

A cloak alone, however, couldn’t keep a girl’s fingers and hands toasty during the chilliest seasons in Edwardian London. In addition to their cloaks, women added warm accessories like a muff to keep warm. A muff was a fashionable addition to any Victorian cloak, a cylinder of fur or heavy fabric with open ends in which a girl inserted her hands. The muff wrapped hands in warmth was a popular choice as soon as it was introduced in 17th century England.

An exclusive piece in our American Heritage collection of historical costumes and accessories, this girls’ Victorian cloak and hand warmer is authentic to those worn on foggy, damp London days. Your black Victorian cloak is crafted from crushed panne velvet, featuring an attached hood trimmed in faux fur. The elegant cape ties closed at the neck for easy wear. Included with the cloak is a matching white faux fur hand warmer, or muff, to complete the look.

Meant to be a complement to our many 19th century pieces, you can mix and match the black fur-trimmed cloak and muff to any piece of your choosing. This add-on accessory fits children as well as adults (up to a size medium), making the cloak and hand warmer perfect pieces for both children and adults seeking a realistic Victorian-era look. Add this cape to one of our Victorian costumes for a perfectly authentic outfit suitable for any day or night out on the town in London’s chilly weather.

This adaptable accessory pair can be used for school events, history lessons, or simply a fun day of experiencing life as a 19th century woman. Made with pride and care right in the United States, this cape and muff duo is built to last.

Fashion history shows that women are forever changing their minds about long versus and short, and this was the same with cloaks. Along with longer versions, shorter cloaks were in vogue from 1850 and were ideal cover ups for wearing over the wider crinoline dress style.
