A Heritage Costumes Exclusive.
The Wild West was a colorful place, filled with crime, tall tales, and shoot outs around every corner. Perhaps most importantly, though, if you know anything about the Old West, you know about Wyatt Earp. Wyatt Earp was no outlaw; rather, he faced off with the famed outlaws and criminals of the 1800s. He made his mark on history on October 26, 1881, the day of the famous shoot out at the OK Corral. At the OK Corral, located in Tombstone within the Arizona Territory, Wyatt Earp, his two brothers, and Wyatt's close friend “Doc" Holliday met in a gun battle with five members and associates of the Clanton family. Wyatt Earp and his fellow men were acting in the name of the law — Earp had labeled the Clantons outlaws. Three of the outlaws were shot to death in the duel, and news of Wyatt Earp’s success spread like wild fire.
After the gunfight at OK Corral, Wyatt Earp’s name came to symbolize the romantic violence associated with the Old West. OK Corral has been celebrated in several Hollywood films, highlighting Earp, his brothers, and Doc Holliday as heroes of the Wild West. Yet historians remain divided about Earp's true motives. Wyatt Earp, however, continued to live an adventurous life in the name of the law long after the shoot out. He killed several more famous outlaws in similar gunfights, finally settling down in California and living out the rest of his life as a saloon keeper and rancher. Though much of Wyatt Earp’s life became legend, he is most remembered for his skill as a marksman and gunfighter.
